TitleUAC Engineering Division
DescriptionThis section chiefly comprises the correspondence of B J Worm, Chief Engineer to UAC. He was originally based in UAC's Marine & Transport Department, in London. The Engineering Department of UAC was established in 1933, when it merged with the Engineering Department of Huileries du Congo Belge, which had remained a subsidiary of Lever Bros on the formation of UAC in 1929. The majority of the records relate to the construction and maintenance of bulk oil plants and palm oil mills in Nigeria, Ghana and the Belgian Congo, and sawmills at Krobo and Sapele in Nigeria. They also include correspondence and papers of Noel R Redfern, Chief Engineer of HCB to 1933, who was based in Brussels, but also worked for the Niger Co, and Frederick Montague Dyke, Chief Chemist, Lever Brothers. They are therefore of mixed provenance, some predating the formation of UAC. A large number of plans of a similar date and provenance, chiefly relating to bulk oil plants in Nigeria, were subsequently transferred to the Plantations Group Department, but more recently reunited with the records of the Engineering Division
